The Camino and Galician film in “Variety” Magazine

“Variety” magazine has dedicated an article on the Camino de Santiago where they talk about he bonds that unite the Camino and film. In the article, titled “St. James in film flurry” describes the camino as a “natural film stage” for many movie directors.
The authors of this article, John Hopewell and Martin Dale, mention the most important films that have been filmed recently in Galicia and along the Camino. In fact, the film that is being filmed at this moment on the Camino “The Way” (“El Camino”), directed by Emilio Estévez and starring Martin Sheen was the motive for writing the article.
Hopewell and Dale links the Camino with the international attention the Galician film industry has received lately. It is in continuous growth and they make a point of mentioning that “Galicia has found a type of film that is 1196 years old”.
“Variety” also explains the film boom in Galicia is related to one important part of the camino de Santiago, the spiritual component. This component of the camino has a big potential according the Vareity Magazine.
The article continues explaining that the regions with the most activities in the film in Spain are Madrid and Cataluña. Even if Galicia does not compete with these two, it does occupy a “crucial” place in the film industry in Spain. “The increase in the popularity of the Camino gives Galicia the possibility to grow economically” they write.
It certainly looks like “Variety” present the Camino de Santiago like one big opportunity for the film industry and for Galicia.
