Working for the integration of disabled people

peregrinos

A group of people with physical, psychological and sensory disabilities has travelled the last 30km of the Camino on special modified bikes. The objective: attract more attention to the needs of people with disabilities. They also underline the importance of removing obstacles that prohibit disabled people the ability to enjoy the tourist areas just as non disabled people do.

The association names “Tambíen” also are in charge of organizing the route, divided into stages. The first stage is between Fontelas and Salceda on Saturday October 10th, in the afternoon they biked the distance between Ceadoiro y Amenal. Sunday the 11th they will travel between Vilamaior until Monte do Gozo and then ending up at the entrance to old town in Santiago at Puerto del Camino.

Family members and volunteers from Orange, the company that sponsors this Camino, will also participate.

This is the sixth Camino of this type that these disabled people have done, but what was special this year was that over 70 people participated and that they also got to meet with the Minister of culture and Tourism in Galicia, Roberto Varela Fariña.

During the last decade the association “Tambíen” has also worked in sports, trying to adapt sports activities to the needs of the disabled persons.
