Quetzal on the Camino de Santiago

The “Ruta Quetzal” commemorates in the holy year, 25 years of expeditions in the Americas and in Europe. To celebrate this they have decided to walk the Camino de Santiago next year, 2010.

The “Quetzal BBVA Route” will start 2010 with a trip to México. The program this year has “The mystery of the white Caminos of the Mayas” as a motto. The people participating in this expedition will experience the White Caminos of the Mayas and the secrets of this fascinating people on the Yucatan peninsula.

Alter their adventures in the Americas, the expedition continues in Spain, walking the Camino de Santiago. They will celebrate the holy year 2010 and that is is 1100 years ago that the kingdom of León was created.

Large parts of this camino will be done at sea, starting off from the port in Cadiz. The pilgrims will stop in Lisbon before arriving at their destination in Galicia, namely Villagarcia de Arousa. From there will travel to Padrón where they will commemorate the Galician writer Rosalía de Castro. They will then walk on foot to Santiago de Compostela.

The “Ruta Quetza” is an educational program, lead by the famous Spanish adventurer Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo. This whole project started with the objective to facilitate interaction between young 16 and 17 year olds in Ibero-American countries. With these participants there will be a mix of cultures, adventures and highlights the values of cooperation, respect and love of nature.

Miguel de la Cuadra-Salcedo has describes this project as follows:

“The Quetzal route is an educational experience where the young participants not only expand their knowledge via de wide range of academic disciplines, but it is also a valuable instrument to make youth aware of nature, preservation of nature.”
